This recipe is designed with baby-led weaning and batch cooking in mind. It uses soft textures and simple ingredients, with just enough flavor to keep little ones interested. Best of all, it’s ready in minutes, making it ideal for busy mornings or snack time without extra dishes.
Simple Ingredients That Pack a Lot of Nutrition

- Whole oats provide fiber and complex carbohydrates, helping little tummies stay satisfied longer.

BLW & Serving Tips
Always ensure the oatmeal is soft, well-cooked, and cooled to a warm temperature before serving. The texture can be easily adjusted to match your baby’s developmental stage:
- Younger babies: Mash thoroughly and thin with a splash of water, breastmilk, or formula for a smooth, easy-to-eat consistency.
- Older babies and toddlers: Leave slightly chunky for texture exploration and independent feeding.
- Finger-food option: Chill leftovers and shape into soft oat patties for little hands to pick up.
Always supervise mealtime and serve warm (not hot) to keep it safe and enjoyable. This approach helps babies explore flavors and textures while developing self-feeding skills — making breakfast both nutritious and fun.

Nutrition 411
Oats (and Oat Flour) is mostly starches and fiber. Oats pack more protein and fat than most other grains and are a good source of beta-glucan, a unique, soluble fiber linked to multiple health benefits. Oats also offer high amounts of many vitamins and minerals, such as manganese, phosphorus, copper, B vitamins, iron, selenium, magnesium, and zinc. They are the only dietary source of powerful antioxidants called avenathramides. They also contain ferulic acid and phytic acid. Oats offer many potential benefits, including reduced cholesterol and blood sugar levels. They are very filling and naturally gluten-free — but may be contaminated with glutenous grains. Simple Homestyle Apple Cinnamon Oatmeal (BLW-Friendly)
Ingredients
- 1 cups old fashioned oats
- 2 cups water
- 2 tablespoons agave or maple syrup optional; for older babies/toddlers
- 1 large apple peeled if desired, small diced or 1 cup apple compote
- ½ teaspoon cinnamon
Instructions
- In a large, deep microwave-safe bowl (to prevent overflow), stir together the oats, water, diced apple, cinnamon, and sweetener, if using.
- Microwave uncovered on high for 3 minutes.
- Stir well, then return to the microwave for 2–3 additional minutes, watching carefully to prevent bubbling over.
- Let the oatmeal rest for 2–3 minutes. The apples will continue to soften and the oats will thicken.
- Stir again and adjust the texture with a splash of warm water, if needed, to reach a soft, BLW-appropriate consistency. For younger eaters, you can use a potato masher to ensure a smoother bite.
❓Frequently Asked Questions – FAQs
1. Is this apple cinnamon oatmeal safe for baby-led weaning?
Yes. When prepared to a soft, mashable consistency, this oatmeal is appropriate for baby-led weaning. Be sure the apples are fully softened and the oats are tender. For younger babies, mash or thin the oatmeal as needed.
2. Can I make this oatmeal without added sweetener?
Absolutely. The apples provide natural sweetness, and added sweeteners are optional. For babies under 1 year, it’s best to skip the agave or maple syrup entirely.
3. What type of oats work best for babies?
Whole rolled oats work well in this recipe because they soften nicely when cooked. For younger babies or early BLW, pulse the oats briefly in a blender before cooking. You can also mash the finished oatmeal for a smoother texture.
4. Can I make this oatmeal ahead of time?
Yes. Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Reheat gently with a splash of water to loosen the texture before serving.
5. Can I freeze apple cinnamon oatmeal for babies?
You can. Portion cooled oatmeal into freezer-safe containers or silicone molds and freeze for up to 2 months. Thaw overnight in the fridge or reheat gently, stirring well and adjusting consistency as needed.

I am going to make this i love Oatmel! So is there a difference in whole oats and old fashioned?
-
Oh, that makes me sooo happy — great question! For overnight oats, old-fashioned (rolled oats) are really the way to go. They’re steamed and flattened, so they soak up liquid easily and soften overnight without any cooking. Whole oats (or oat groats) are unprocessed and super chewy, so they’d need much longer soaking or cooking to get tender. Technically, I used old-fashioned oats in this recipe — I only said “whole” to distinguish them from quick oats. I’ll update the recipe to make that nuance clear so everyone can get perfectly creamy overnight oats!
